An Interview With ALexz Johnson

Alexz Johnson stars as Jude Harrison and performs all of the songs on Instant Star. Here's her latest IMterview with The-Seth:

The-Seth: Alexz? Hi, it's Seth from The N.
-Alexz-: hi seth
The-Seth: Are you ready to do this?
-Alexz-: Ya! I've never done this before...
-Alexz-: Not too sure what I do
The-Seth: Piece of cake. Just like a regular interview, except typing instead of talking.
-Alexz-: Ok, cool!
-Alexz-: So, should I grab Alexz?
-Alexz-: just joking...
The-Seth: You got me
The-Seth: So, you're out west somewhere?
-Alexz-: Vancouver, BC
The-Seth: That's where you're from, right?
-Alexz-: Born and raised
The-Seth: So are you taking a break at home, or are you working? (I mean in general, not right this minute.)
-Alexz-: I had a break over Christmas, and I'm off to Maui with the family for 2 weeks. Then I'm back at work. I'll be working in LA on my record!
The-Seth: Awesome. Will you be recording? Do you have the songs all written?
-Alexz-: I have about 10 solid songs finished. I'll be writing in LA and recording.
-Alexz-: My brother and I write the music
The-Seth: Wow. 10 songs. That's great. Did you write any of the songs in the new season of Instant Star?
-Alexz-: Nope. I was too busy filming, and working on my own stuff for my record. My brother, Brendan Johnson wrote a song from season 2 though. "Another Thin Line".
The-Seth: How do you feel the music in the new season compares to last season (just in terms of feel)? Same kind of styles?
-Alexz-: Pretty much! Each song relates to an episode. It really is a compilation of a bunch of different styles, I find.
-Alexz-: Pop, rock.
The-Seth: What do you think the biggest difference is between season 1 and 2 (other than the music)?
-Alexz-: It's an older show this season. Jude's growing up. She's making mistakes and learning every episode.
-Alexz-: More edge, a lot of drama, and cute boys!! More cute boys!!!
-Alexz-: Jude has a band this season, as well. The Spiederman Mind Explosion.
The-Seth: Right; I chatted with Tyler the other day. And you guys played together for a concert special, right?
-Alexz-: Ya! That was a blast
The-Seth: So what can you tell me?
-Alexz-: We shot that in Toronto.
The-Seth: So you guys played stuff from the new season?
-Alexz-: Yup! The cast was there too!
-Alexz-: I got to perform "Skin" from season 1 with my brother on guitar. We wrote that song together
The-Seth: Had you played together onstage before?
-Alexz-: Ya, we've played in NY
-Alexz-: When it comes to "my music" Brendan is a huge part of my sound, and will be working with me in LA on my record. We're sort of a team.
-Alexz-: He's a producer
The-Seth: Is he your older or younger brother?
-Alexz-: Older. Bren's 23
-Alexz-: I'm one of six. Right in the middle of 10 kids. 6 brothers and 3 sisters - from the same mom and dad.
The-Seth: Wow.
-Alexz-: i mean, sorry - not one of 6. I'm ..6.
-Alexz-: lol
-Alexz-: ya!
-Alexz-: I think that's why I love to perform? lol
The-Seth: So how was that growing up? Were you always wishing for fewer siblings, or more? I could imagine it going either way.
-Alexz-: At times I had to get away and lock myself in the closet and write. But, most of the time I loved it! I couldn't imagine not having so many sibs. I have my own baseball team back at home. I carry that with me, ya know?
The-Seth: Totally. Also plenty of people to fill up a club when you're just starting to perform...
-Alexz-: I can fill a stadium with relatives. Let's not repeat that, though. lol!
The-Seth: You said that you didn't have time to write songs for the new season. is it hard to balance music and acting?
-Alexz-: At times. But, music always comes first.
-Alexz-: It's my first passion.
-Alexz-: Now, I get to focus on my record !
The-Seth: Right! So Instant Star was a pretty big hit. It changed a lot for you, I'm sure. How's your experience of fame different from Jude's?
-Alexz-: Well, I'm not as famous? lol. Jude wins a contest, I'm slowly chipping away at making a record, and taking time to write the songs. Its just a different thing from Jude.
-Alexz-: Jude battles with GMajor every episode and is trying to find her sound.
The-Seth: How much of Jude is there in you, and vice-versa?
-Alexz-: Jude is kind of me a few years ago. We differ in a lot of ways though. Different kinds of music inspires her, and different events inspires her to write.
-Alexz-: At the same time, Jude is like any other 16 year old girl with the same insecurities and lessons to learn..
-Alexz-: about life, love, family...the industry!
The-Seth: Right.
The-Seth: So I asked Tyler what the one thing I should ask YOU is, and he said:
The-Seth: "ask her if she wants to be as big as Madonna."
-Alexz-: Lol
-Alexz-: funny guy
The-Seth: So do you?
-Alexz-: I wanna be bigger then madonna, lol
-Alexz-: not really though
-Alexz-: I don't need to be famous...i just want to make great music
The-Seth: Very cool.
The-Seth: Okay, I'll let you go.
The-Seth: Thanks so much for doing this.
The-Seth: Good luck with the record!
-Alexz-: No problem! Thank you!

But what happens when the competition is over, when you are on the road trying to keep your face out there and they are already auditioning your successor?

That's what the series "Instant Star," shot in Toronto and airing in more than 120 countries, is about.

Alexz Johnson, 19, plays spirited singer/songwriter Jude Harrison, who was 16 when the series started two seasons ago after she'd won a nationwide singing competition.

Jude is a fledgling rock chick with an affinity for trouble: she loses her boy-next-door beau to a punk girl named Patsy Sewer; gets suspended by her record label for disobedience; has the hots for her bad-boy producer, Tommy, who has an off-and-on relationship with her older sister, Sadie, who vacillates between bimbo-dom and sorority girl; suffers through the dissolution of her parents' marriage as her mother takes up with her sleazy divorce lawyer; and discovers her money has been misappropriated.

No wonder Johnson gets fan mail from teens worldwide - it's a rock 'n roll soap.

Born in Westminister, B.C., Johnson started singing at age 3 for family get-togethers. By age 11, she was National Anthem girl, singing in NHL and NBA games.

Her big break was landing the role of Annie in the Disney series "So Weird" at age 13, followed by TV and film gigs including the series "Cold Squad" and the film "Final Destination 3."

She sent in a tape of herself to the producers of "Instant Star."

"They wanted a girl who could sing and act and write music - the full deal. That was me," she says.

"I never planned to act. My parents had 10 kids [six boys, four girls and the 'z' in Alexz is an obsession of her mom's] and I had to make money for studio equipment."

She has a four-octave range, so she's often described as "the West Coast Céline?"

"It's always a compliment," she hedges. "She has an amazing voice, but it's not the music I write."

Nor is Jude's.

"Jude's is younger; it's radio friendly. If I had to compare [my own music] to anyone, it would be Annie Lennox or Kate Bush. I'm not Jude.

"There are bits of me in her but her decisions are different, like about Tommy. Pretty soon she'll be too old for Tommy: 'Wake up and smell the adult, Tommy.' And I would have had her leave G Major [her label] a long time ago."

Johnson has a contract with Capitol Records and will release a solo album - for which she is writing all the songs with her brother, Brendan -next year.

When she was a little girl, she wanted to be a singing nurse.

Say what?

"I wanted to help people," she explains. "I loved it that when I sang; people got emotional.

"I want people to love my music. I want Peter Gabriel to put on my music and get it. I can make it through word of mouth rather than be in Billboard.

"I come from a family of 10. I can get my siblings to buy my record."

The series is currently in reruns but season three is set to start in February.

ne ich denk mal Alexz wollte nur zum ausdruck bringen, dass die fans sie nich toll finden sollen weil sie Jude und Jude's Musik mögen sondern sie will beweisen, dass sie jemand ganz anderes ist und das Jude nunmal nur eine Rolle ist Alexz würde NIEMALS sagen dass ihr die fans egal sind und so.. und man merkt ja auch das ihr Instant Star nicht egal ist, sons hätte sie ja wohl kaum so viele songs dafür geschrieben^^

nur das komische: bisher mögen wir doch sozusagen judes musik. wir kennen ja kaum wirkliche alexz songs, sondern meistens die von instant star.
